Once, on my way to work, in scary scary Westminster I picked up a woman who was walking from the bus stop. It was cold out and the sidewalks weren't shoveled and the nearest bus drop-off is over a mile from the nearest office building. I pulled over, had her hop in and then my internal dialog:

"Are you stupid, you're pregnant."
"It's FINE! She's a woman - I can take her."
"Fine. Have your phone in your pocket so when you're tossed in a ditch you can call someone."

She was on her way to a job interview and was worried she'd be late - she hadn't anticipated the lack of clear sidewalks or the cold. We found her building easily. She got out and thanked me. Everything was fine. But I felt ridiculous for being worried.

You handled your situation better than I would have. I find myself squeezing E's hand a little tighter when we're out and strangers approach us. Any stranger, any color, any clothes. I think we've been taught that you just never know ... but then I go and teach E to answer all adults' greeting, whether he knows them or not. So, whose ridiculous now?
