Here is another one I just found. I messaged it to you, but I'm not sure if you got it, so just for posterity (and partially for me as well), I'm posting it here.

gene:

I will not be doing the work myself. This project will involve, at least, the following: Complete removal of the roof, adding a second story to the house, building a new roof, a kitchen/family room remodel on the first floor and a two car garage.

That's not to mention that the exterior brick wall has to be partially deconstructed and reconstructed before any of that can even start.

sounds like a big job. are you doing the work yourself? I'm in the middle of remodeling the kitchen on my own and I gotta warn you that's it's a lot harder and more stressful then you think, so be prepared.

I found the how-to section of this site helpful, specially about removing walls, hanging dry-wall, electrical etc... http://www.easy2diy.com/cm/easy/diy_ht_index.asp?page_id=35720188

If you're hiring a contractor they'll setup the permits for you, but if you're going to do your own work go to the building department in your town and describe what you want to. They'll tell you what permits you need and guide you if you have any questions. Also, if you ever wonder if something's up to code, ask them, or go to a book store and look at building code books.

I also sometime read Design Public, http://blog.designpublic.com/

Don't subscribe to all of AT, are you insane? Pick the subset you like the most (I like SF and Chi) and read that.
